Make Blogger Blog Comments Section DoFollow by Removing Nofollow Attributes!

All blogger templates are designed to add nofollow attributes to all links used in comments section. Adding a Nofollow tag will prevent search engine spiders from following those links. Initially this Nofollow attributes was implemented to prevent spammers from spamming your comments section. But if you want to get more comments on your blogger blog and encourage your readers to participate in your on going discussions, you must make your blogger blog’s comment section Dofollow. Know that by making your blog’s comment section Dofollow, you are authorizing spiders to follow all links from the comments section. This will work as a linkback to those links from your blog, but you will get more and more commentators to comment on your blog posts. Having many comments on a blogs shows it’s activeness and also encourage new readers to add their valuable comments.

How to Make Blogger Comments Section DoFollow :

We have to edit blog template to make your blog Dofollow. But before proceeding, I would suggest you to make a backup of your blogger blog. You may need that later, if anything goes wrong!

  1. Login to Blogger Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Layout >> Edit HTML >> Expand Widgets Template
  3. Search for the following code in your template.
  4. <dl id=’comments-block’>
    <b:loop values=’data:post.comments’var=’comment’>
    <dt class=’comment-author’expr:id=’”comment-” + data:comment.id’>
    <a expr:name=’”comment-” +data:comment.id’/>
    <b:if cond=’data:comment.authorUrl’>
    <a expr:href=’data:comment.authorUrl’ rel=’nofollow’><data:comment.author/></a>
    <b:else/>
    <data:comment.author/>
    </b:if>
    <data:commentPostedByMsg/>
    </dt>

  5. You can see a code in red and bold font there. It’s rel=’nofollow’ and this piece of code adds Nofollow attributes to your blog. Delete this code from your template.
  6. Click on Save to save the changes.
  7. You are done.

Now you have made your blogger blog’s comment section Dofollow and it’s time to let the whole word know about it. Follow the below steps to mention about this on your blog’s sidebar.

  1. Login to your Blogger Dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Layout >> Page Elements >> Add a Gadget >> HTML/JavaScript
  3. Write the following lines in that widget box.
  4. All Comments on this blog are DoFollow.

    All Comments are Moderated.

    Spamming won’t be Tolerated.

  5. Now Save changes to that widget and place in the bottom of your sidebar.
  6. You are Done.

That’s it. Now you have successfully removed Nofollow tag from blogger blog and made it Dofollow. Many people think that making a blog’s comment section Dofollow will harm their PR and SERP issues, but there are DoFollow blogs with a PR more than 6 and stands well as far as SERP is concerned. So, this is a wise idea to gather more comments on your blogger blog by making it DoFollow.

    I think there’s a wordpress plugin, dofollow plugin which automatically makes it dofollow :) I am sure Bapun will come up with that as well soon. Thanks a ton for this trick, it worked out perfectly :)

    Nice article, I have done this in my blog.

    May I ask, is there any way to change allowed tags in comments box?
    (In wordpress I know there is, so I ask for blogger).
    Some wordpress blogs allow: object, embed, and img tags in comment box so you can embed a youtube video as a comment!
    What about blogger?
    Thanks.

    Greekbox, There may be a way to change allowed tags in comment box but probably not. However, Blogger is constantly working on adding new features, in part because of the competition with WordPress. So keep watching google/blogger.

    In response to my other question above about nofollow on Blogger (poster Matt), I found that it is currently possible to set the Name in the comment to dofollow, but it is currently not possible to set links inside of a comment to dofollow in blogger. See exactly how: How to Set Blogger to Dofollow

    Currently, I am beginning a company blog. Do you think there is any special considerations for a company blog that does not relate to personal blogs? I really want to dofollow, but I am not sure. I can always test and see how it goes.

  22. Bapun 21. Jan, 2010 at 11:18 am #

    @ Sean : If you are developing a company blog, you may like to implement DoFollow links. Since you are not building a tech or similar blog with an aim to compete in search engine ranking points (SERP), making it DoFollow will add more value to it.

  23. Matt@ dofollow cool 22. Jan, 2010 at 10:44 pm #

    Sean, With your company blog, the consideration is the same as for the personal blogs. If you are willing and able to moderate comments and make sure that all links out are to solid “neighborhoods” as per google (no poker, pron, link farms), you will be fine allowing outgoing links to be dofollow.

    Trust me, you will get a lot more interest in commenting in your blog, and hopefully more readers too ;)

    If however, you are unable to moderate your comments, you would be best advised to go with the nofollow links. This simply tells google that you can not vouch for the quality of your outgoing links.

    You will not be penalized for any kind of link by google in this case and your search ranking in google will not suffer no matter what links you have if they are all nofollow.
