How to edit a Registry Key (regkey) in Windows XP or Vista?

Before writing the tutorial on how to edit registry key in XP or Vista, I want you to know that registry keys are very risky and highly complicated. If you are not familiar with regkey or don’t know what are you doing, I would strongly suggest you to hit the exit button. One wrong registry key edit and your system will stop working entirely. I would also like to suggest you to keep a backup of the registry file before moving to edit it.

Here is the tutorial that explains the simplest way to edit a registry key. Remember that XP and Vista users have to follow different ways to edit regkey values.

Registry Key editing in Windows XP

  1. Navigate to Start >> Run >> type Regedit >> hit Enter
  2. Registry Editor windows will pop up
  3. Go to the sub registry key and click on it to see it’s value on right hand side pane
  4. Change Registry Key in XP or Vista

  5. Double click on the corresponding value and change it
  6. You are done.

Registry Key Editing in Vista

  1. Type regedit in the Start menu
  2. Edit regedit in Vista

  3. Click on regedit from the drop down menu search results
  4. Go to the sub registry key and click on it to see it’s value on right hand side pane
  5. Double click on the corresponding value and change it
  6. You are done.
